my base unit flashes a red light all the time when charging. i have the HDR 175

I put in new rechargable batteries. The base unit was initially red, and after a while went to flashing red. Now, the headset won't turn on.

I just changed the batteries. My HDR175 headphones cut out every few seconds. I disconnected the system for 30 minutes. But cannot stop the cut outs. Any ideas?
