General Power Tool Safety Warnings W ARNING! Read all safety warnings and instructions. F ailure to follo w the warnings
and instructions may result in electric shock, fire and/or serious injury .
SAVE ALL WARNINGS AND INSTRUCTIONS FOR FUTURE REFERENCE The term “pow er tool” in the warnings refers to y our mains-operated (corded) po wer tool or
batter y-operated (cordless) po wer tool.
1) WORK AREA SAFETY
a) Keep w ork area clean and well lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents.
b) Do not operate po wer tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of
flammable liquids, gases or dust. P ower tools create sparks which ma y ignite the dust
or fumes.
c) Keep children and b ystanders away while operating a po wer tool. Distr actions can
cause you to lose control.
2) ELECTRICAL SAFETY
a) P ower tool plugs m ust match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any wa y . Do not
use any adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) po wer tools. Unmodified plugs and
matching outlets will reduce risk of electr ic shoc k.
b) Av oid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces such as pipes, radiators,
ranges and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electr ic shoc k if your body is
ear thed or grounded.
c) Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. W ater entering a power tool will
increase the risk of electr ic shoc k.
d) Do not ab use the cord. Never use the cor d for carrying, pulling or unplugging the
power tool. Keep cord a way fr om heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts. Damaged
or entangled cords increase the risk of electr ic shoc k.
e) When operating a power tool outdoors, use an extension cor d suitable f or outdoor
use. Use of a cord suitable f or outdoor use reduces the risk of electric shock.
f) If operating a power tool in a damp location is una voidab le, use a ground fault
circuit interrupter (GFCI) pr otected supply . Use of a GFCI reduces the risk of electr ic
shock.
3) PERSONAL SAFETY
a) Stay alert, watc h what you are doing and use common sense when operating a
power tool. Do not use a power tool while you are tired or under the influence of
drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of inattention while operating pow er tools ma y
result in serious personal injur y .
b) Use personal pr otective equipment. Alwa ys wear ey e protection. Protective equipment
such as dust mask, non-skid saf ety shoes, hard hat, or hearing protection used for
appropriate conditions will reduce personal injur ies .
c) Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure the switch is in the off position bef ore
connecting to power sour ce and/or battery pack, picking up or carrying the tool.
Carr ying po wer tools with your finger on the s witch or energising power tools that ha ve the
s witch on invites accidents .
d) Remove any adjusting ke y or wrench before turning the po wer tool on. A wrench or
a ke y left attached to a rotating par t of the pow er tool ma y result in personal injur y .
e) Do not overreach. Keep pr oper footing and balance at all times. This enables better
control of the power tool in une xpected situations.
f) Dress properl y . Do not wear loose c lothing or jewellery . K eep your hair , c lothing and
gloves a way fr om moving parts. Loose clothes, jewellery or long hair can be caught in
moving parts.
g) If devices are pro vided for the connection of dust e xtraction and collection facilities,
ensure these are connected and properl y used. Use of dust collection can reduce dust-
related hazards.
4) PO WER TOOL USE AND CARE
a) Do not for ce the power tool. Use the correct power tool f or your application. The
correct power tool will do the job better and saf er at the rate for which it w as designed.
b) Do not use the power tool if the switc h does not turn it on and off. Any power tool
that cannot be controlled with the s witch is dangerous and must be repaired.
c) Disconnect the plug from the power sour ce and/or the battery pack fr om the power
tool before making an y adjustments, changing accessories, or storing po wer tools.
Such pre ventiv e safety measures reduce the risk of star ting the power tool accidentally .
d) Store idle po wer tools out of the reach of children and do not allo w persons
unfamiliar with the power tool or these instructions to operate the po wer tool. Po w e r
tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users.
e) Maintain power tools. Check for misalignment or binding of mo ving par ts, breakage
of parts and any other condition that may aff ect the power tool’ s operation. If
damaged, have the po wer tool repaired before use. Many accidents are caused b y
poorly maintained power tools.
f) Keep cutting tools sharp and c lean. Proper ly maintained cutting tools with sharp cutting
edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control.
g) Use the power tool, accessories and tool bits etc., in accor dance with these
instructions taking into account the working conditions and the w ork to be
performed. Use of the power tool f or operations different from those intended could result
in a hazardous situation.
5) SER VICE
a) Have y our power tool serviced by a qualified repair per son using only identical
replacement parts. This will ensure that the saf ety of the pow er tool is maintained.
Additional Specific Safety Instructions • W ear ear protector s with impact drills. Exposure to noise can cause hearing loss.
• Use auxiliary handles supplied with the tool. Loss of control can cause personal injur y .
• Hold tool by insulated gripping surfaces when perf orming an operation where the
cutting tools may contact hid den wiring or its own cor d. Contact with a “live” wire will
make e xposed metal par ts of the tool “liv e” and shock the operator .
• Use clamps or other practical wa y to secure and support the workpiece to a stable
platform. Holding the wor k b y hand or against your body is unstab le and ma y lead to loss of
control.
• W ear safety goggles or other e ye pr otection. Hammering and dr illing operations cause
chips to fly . Flying par ticles can cause per manent e ye damage .
• Keep handles dry , c lean, and free from oil and grease. This will enable better control of
the tool.
• Air vents often cover mo ving parts and should be av oided. Loose clothes, je wellery or
long hair can be caught in moving parts.
• An extension cor d must ha ve adequate wire size (A WG or American Wire Gauge) for
safety . The smaller the gauge number of the wire , the greater the capacity of the cab le, that
is 16 gauge has more capacity than 18 gauge. An undersized cord will cause a drop in line
voltage resulting in loss of po wer and o verheating. When using more than one e xtension to
make up the total length, be sure each individual e xtension contains at least the minimum
wire size . The f ollowing tab le shows the correct size to use depending on cord length and
nameplate ampere rating. If in doubt, use the ne xt heavier gauge . The smaller the gauge
number , the heavier the cord.
