Place the game board in the center of the table, making sure the cities are visible to all players. Shuffle the train cards and deal each player four cards face up. Then, give each player 45 train pieces of their color. You are now ready to start the game!
The starting player is the person who has most recently traveled by train. If there's a tie, the starting player is the oldest player in the game.
Draw two train cards from the top of the deck or from the face-up cards on the table. If you draw a locomotive card, it counts as two cards. Remember, if you draw a face-up locomotive card, you cannot draw another card on the same turn.
To claim a route, you must play a set of train cards of the same color equal to the length of the route. Place your train pieces on the route, and remember to keep track of the number of train pieces you have left.
To calculate the final score, add up the points earned from completed routes, bonus points from connecting specific cities, subtract points for any uncompleted routes, and add or subtract points according to the Destination Ticket cards you have completed or not. The player with the highest total score wins the game.
