PrivateNetwork Mode

Prior to2012,everyDMcardandendpointinaninstallationrequiredits ownIPaddress on
thecorporatenetwork.In2012,CrestronintroducedPNMtoDMswitchers.PNMgreatly
reduces thenumber of IPaddressesrequiredfor DMinstallations.Crestronrecommends
usingPNMtomanageEthernetsettingsfor DMcards andendpoints connectedtoaDM
switcher.Othermethodsarenotrecommended.For details onlegacymodes ofoperation,
seeCrestronTrueBlueOnlineHelp.
NOTE:PNMis notapplicabletostandaloneinstallations involvingdirectlyconnectedDM
endpoints withnoassociatedDMswitchers.Intheseinstallations,eachendpointdevice
needsitsownIPaddress,either configuredmanuallyor viaDHCP.
PNMcreatesacompletelyprivateIPnetworkfor allDMcards andendpoints thatare
connectedtotheDMswitcher,effectivelyisolatingthemfrom thebuildingnetwork.PNM
significantlystreamlines homeandorganizationalinfrastructures,conservesIPaddresses,
reduces costs,andsimplifies systemmanagementandtroubleshooting.
Theonlydevicethatappears onthebuildingnetworkis theDMswitcher.Theswitcher
needsjustoneIP address,whichcaneitherbesetstaticallyor assignedviathebuilding's
DHCPserver.InPNMmode,noneof thecardsor endpoints aredirectlyreachableviathe
networkof thebuilding.Instead,communicationwiththesedevicesismanagedthrough
themainDMswitcher.ThedevicesconnectedtotheLAN ports foundonmanyDM
endpoints remainvisibletothenetwork.SeePrivateNetworkModewithAuxiliaryDevices
for anillustration.
ThemainDMswitcherCPUis theonlydeviceconnectedtobothnetworks.TheCPUmay
receiveaninstructiononthepublic network(suchasfromaCrestroncontrolsystem)and
createanewinstructionfor adeviceontheprivatenetwork(DMcard,blade,or endpoint).
AtnotimedoesanEthernetpacketfromthepublicnetworktraversetotheprivate
network,andnoprivateEthernetpackets traversetothepublic network.
For mostinstallations,suchas incorporateor universitysettings,usingPNMisthebest
practicebecauseitdoesnotheavilyimpactthenetwork.PNMalsoisolates DM-related
traffic.
